INSURANCE ANSWERS

Insurance basics

Can I get personalized insurance advice here?

You can use the guides, checklists and enquiry routes to organise your needs. Personalized insurance advice and a recommendation about your particular policy must come from a licensed professional who has reviewed the relevant facts.

What does general insurance mean for my household or business?

Start with the particular need: car insurance, home insurance, office insurance or another business insurance activity. The right information is different for each, and a general insurance label does not describe the coverages, exclusions or limits of a policy.

How can AI help with insurance research?

AI tools can help explain general insurance terms and organize questions for a licensed professional. Keep personal information out of general research, and verify important answers against the policy wording and a licensed professional. An AI response is not an insurer quote or confirmation of coverage.

Is Insurance Genie an insurer or brokerage?

No. Insurance Genie is an independent insurance information and referral platform. Participating, appropriately licensed providers are responsible for advice, quotes and policy placement.

What is an insurance premium?

A premium is the amount you pay to keep an insurance policy in force. Check the total price, payment schedule and conditions, rather than comparing a monthly payment alone.

What is an insurance deductible?

A deductible is the portion of a covered claim you pay under the policy. Check whether different losses have different deductibles and whether you could afford the amount before choosing a higher one.

What are policy limits and exclusions?

A limit caps what a policy pays for a specified coverage. An exclusion identifies something the policy does not cover. Read both, along with conditions and deductibles, before deciding whether a policy fits your needs.

Is an insurance quote the same as confirmed coverage?

A quote is a proposed price based on the information supplied. Confirm acceptance, payment requirements, the effective date and the policy documents with the provider before relying on coverage.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Car insurance

Why can two insurers quote different prices for the same car?

Insurers assess risk using their own approved pricing approach and claims experience. Your vehicle, driving history, location, annual distance and coverage selections also matter. Give each provider the same information before comparing the resulting annual premiums. FSRA explains rate factors.

Should I compare monthly or annual car insurance prices?

Start with the full cost for the same policy period. Then check the payment schedule, initial payment and any instalment charges. Dividing an annual premium by twelve is a budgeting calculation; it does not confirm the insurer's monthly payment offer.

Where should I start when comparing car insurance in Ontario?

Compare the same drivers, vehicle, use, limits and deductibles. Ask about eligible discounts and payment costs, then review what is covered. Cheap auto insurance Ontario offers should not be judged by a monthly headline alone.

How do I compare car insurance without sacrificing coverage?

Yes. Ask for equivalent coverage and a clear explanation of optional choices. Compare auto insurance Ontario proposals using the annual premium, fees and deductibles, and decide what you could afford to pay after a loss.

Can I get a car insurance quote online immediately?

The current website provides an enquiry route and comparison guidance; it does not issue an instant insurer-approved premium. A participating licensed provider must assess the details and confirm the offer. An enquiry does not activate insurance.

How should new drivers compare affordable car insurance?

Disclose the actual licence history, training, primary driver and vehicle use. Ask which options can consider the driver and which conditions apply. Do not name someone else as the main driver simply to obtain a lower estimate.

Does low mileage car insurance mean I should understate my driving?

No. Use an honest annual estimate and explain the actual routine. Ask about any available low-distance or usage-based option and its conditions, then update the provider when the way the vehicle is used changes.

Can I buy one day car insurance or a short-term policy?

Ask a licensed provider whether a short term car insurance quote is available for your actual reason, dates, vehicle and province. Do not assume one day car insurance, weekend only car insurance or one month car insurance works like an annual policy paid monthly. Availability and minimum premiums vary. When comparing short term car insurance companies, check the exact coverages, effective dates, cancellation charges and any restrictions. A cheap advertised daily price is not confirmation that an insurer can cover your situation.

What can a car insurance calculator tell me?

A car insurance calculator can illustrate a budget or compare prices you enter; a real insurer quote requires your individual information and underwriting review. This distinction applies to a Toronto car insurance calculator, an Oshawa comparison or a Scarborough estimate. Our savings comparison uses your figures and does not generate insurance prices. To obtain an actual quote, use the insurance enquiry options .

What does “full coverage” or “third-party insurance” mean?

Full coverage is a marketing expression, not a promise that every loss is covered. Ask the provider to list required protection, collision, comprehensive and any optional benefits or endorsements included in the quote. A third-party liability limit is only one part of that review. Compare deductibles, sometimes called excesses elsewhere, and exclusions too. For motorcycles, leisure vehicles, rental cars or company vehicles, ask which policy or endorsement fits that particular use rather than assuming personal car coverage applies.

Does the vehicle model or adding a second car change the quote?

Ask for a quote using the exact year, model, trim, ownership and use. GMC, Genesis, Jeep or Dodge vehicles cannot be priced from the badge alone; the same is true for any used car. When adding another vehicle, disclose every driver and ask whether a multi-vehicle option is available. Compare the total annual cost of both arrangements. The cheapest vehicle or city in a published list cannot establish your own premium.

What is a comprehensive claim for car insurance?

A comprehensive claim asks the insurer to cover eligible damage under the policy's comprehensive section, such as covered theft, vandalism or certain weather damage. It is different from a liability claim and from collision coverage. Check the cause of loss, exclusions, deductible and any endorsements before assuming the damage is covered. Ask the adjuster which section of your policy applies and what supporting information is needed.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Home insurance

How do I know if a lower premium is better value?

Put the total annual cost next to the same requested coverage and deductibles. Ask which terms changed and whether fees apply. A useful comparison explains both the price difference and what you would be responsible for after a claim.

What should I compare in a home insurance policy?

Compare the same property details, rebuilding or contents values, deductibles and requested coverages. Home insurance quotes Ontario residents receive should be reviewed for insured events, water-related options, special limits, exclusions and living-expense conditions, not only the premium.

How do I compare home insurance quotes when looking for savings?

Use the same rebuilding or contents assumptions and the same requested cover. Ask about eligible discounts and a combined home and auto review, then compare the annual cost, fees and deductibles. A lower price does not show a like-for-like saving if important cover has been removed.

What belongs in a house insurance quote?

Prepare construction and renovation details, roof and major systems information, occupancy, prior claims, security and a realistic contents estimate. Explain a home business, rental use, valuable items or an extended absence before relying on a proposal.

Is house insurance the same as tenant insurance?

No. A homeowner and a tenant have different property interests. A tenant policy generally focuses on the tenant’s belongings and liability; the landlord’s building insurance does not replace it.

Does home insurance cover every kind of water damage?

Do not assume it does. Ask which water damage events are included, which require optional coverage and what exclusions and deductibles apply.

Home building and contents insurance: what is different?

Home content insurance, often called contents insurance, concerns your belongings. Building insurance concerns the dwelling itself. For home insurance in Ontario, Canada, estimate the cost to replace possessions and ask how limits apply to jewellery, art, electronics and business equipment. For luxury home insurance, discuss specialist rebuilding features and valuable items rather than assuming a standard limit is enough. IBC explains buying adequate home insurance.

How should I compare direct home insurance with a broker proposal?

When comparing a proposal from a direct insurer with one arranged by a broker, use the same property details, rebuilding and contents values, coverages and deductibles. Ask who provides advice, which insurer issues the policy, and who handles changes or claims. This website routes enquiries to participating licensed partners; it does not itself issue home insurance. Compare the written terms and total cost rather than assuming either route is always cheaper.

How should high-value homes and household contents be insured?

For a mansion, estate home or other high-value property, discuss the actual rebuilding features, professional valuations where needed and valuable belongings. Do not substitute the purchase price for the rebuilding assessment. Household contents insurance should reflect an inventory and the limits that apply to particular items. Comparing house and contents insurance means reviewing both the dwelling and possessions, along with liability, deductibles and optional coverage. A higher-value description does not itself guarantee enhanced wording.

Can I compare home and car insurance together?

Request both a combined home-and-auto proposal and suitable separate quotes using the same coverage. Auto and condo insurance may also be eligible for a multi-policy option, subject to the insurer's rules. Compare the total cost, not just the advertised discount. The household's claims, drivers, property and occupancy still need to be assessed. A discount on one policy does not mean every combined offer is the best fit.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Condo & tenant

How do home, condo and tenant insurance differ?

A homeowner, condominium unit owner and tenant have different property interests. Ontario house insurance should be matched to ownership and use. A condo insurance quote needs the corporation’s insurance responsibilities and the unit owner’s improvements, belongings and liability to be clarified.

What affects the cost of condo insurance?

An average cannot price a particular unit. Values, building details, coverage, deductibles and claims can differ. For a condo insurance quote in Toronto or another city, use the actual property and compare the proposed terms rather than treating an online average as your premium.

Is the best condo insurance simply the cheapest quote?

No universal best policy fits every condominium owner. Review the unit, corporation’s policy, deductibles, improvements, special limits and liability. Ask the licensed provider to identify any gaps or overlap between the proposal and the corporation’s responsibilities.

What does tenant contents insurance protect?

A tenant enquiry should address the renter’s belongings, personal liability and any additional living-expense cover offered. Ask about roommates, valuable items, limits and exclusions. The landlord’s building policy does not replace the tenant’s own review.

Which policy fits a house, townhome, condo or apartment?

First establish ownership and occupancy. A freehold townhome usually needs a different review from a condominium townhome with a corporation policy. A condo owner should review contents, improvements, liability and possible assessments alongside that corporation's coverage. A tenant normally needs protection for their own belongings and liability rather than the building owner's whole policy. For an apartment building, group home, estate property or unusual accommodation, describe the full occupancy and use so the provider can identify the correct market.

How much is home insurance for a condo or rental property?

There is no single cost that applies to every condo, rented house or apartment. The quote depends on the property, occupancy, coverage, deductibles and insurer. Tell the provider if a condo is rented to tenants or used for short stays. Compare condo insurance quotes with the same assumptions and ask whether landlord protection is needed. A tenant's contents premium should not be used as a comparison for the cost of insuring the building.

Do condo movers need to provide proof of insurance?

Check the condominium corporation's moving rules and ask the mover for the evidence the building requires. Requirements can differ by property. A mover's certificate does not establish that all of your possessions are insured in transit, and your own unit policy should not be assumed to cover every moving loss. Confirm booking, elevator and insurance requirements with the building and review the mover's contract before the moving day.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Business & industries

I need proof of insurance for a contract. Can I start here?

Yes. Start a business enquiry and explain the deadline. Have the contract’s insurance requirements ready for the receiving provider to review. A certificate or evidence of insurance requires the provider’s confirmation; this page does not issue it.

How do I work out which coverage my business needs?

Describe the full operation rather than choosing a policy by name alone. The business guides below can help you prepare questions. A licensed provider can assess your requirements and explain which available options fit them.

What can small business insurance include?

Start with liability, property and interruption questions, then discuss professional services, products, cyber incidents and vehicles where relevant. Small business insurance is not one fixed package. The proposed activities, limits, exclusions and conditions decide what the policy covers.

How do I request a business insurance quote?

Prepare a clear activity description, business locations, revenue, staff, equipment and stock values, claims and customer or lease requirements. A small business insurance quote should use those details before you compare price.

Is business liability insurance the same as professional liability?

No. General liability insurance commonly addresses certain injury and property-damage allegations. Professional liability concerns claims about professional advice or services. A business can need discussion of both; neither label proves that every activity is covered.

What should a business insurance broker explain?

Ask which providers can consider the activity, the markets compared, the coverage differences and any fees. Insurance Genie connects enquiries with participating licensed providers; advice and policy placement are supplied by those providers subject to availability and underwriting.

What affects the cost of business insurance?

Business insurance cost depends on the operation and requested cover. Compare proposals using the same activities, values, limits and deductibles. A published average or percentage example is not an insurer’s quote for your business.

What is business renters insurance?

Business tenant insurance or small business renters insurance may concern contents, improvements and liabilities in leased space. Send the lease and clarify which property belongs to the landlord and which responsibilities belong to the tenant.

Is business insurance one standard policy?

No. Commercial insurance can combine different coverages. The activities, property, contracts and proposed wording determine what is appropriate.

Car wash insurance and car dealership insurance

A car wash or vehicle dealership needs a review of its own operations, premises, equipment and customer vehicles. For car dealership insurance in Oshawa or Barrie, describe vehicle stock, demonstrations, repairs and road use rather than relying on a personal auto policy. For car wash insurance, explain whether staff handle vehicles and what equipment is used. Ask a licensed commercial broker about the appropriate specialist coverages and eligibility; a general business label does not establish that every activity is covered.

What information does a factory insurance review need?

Describe what the factory makes, its production processes, machinery, raw materials and finished stock. Include storage arrangements, fire protection, suppliers, deliveries and any work performed away from the premises. Ask a licensed commercial broker to assess property, product liability, equipment breakdown and interruption needs, and whether pollution, recall or transit exposures require separate review. Factory insurance is an assessment of the actual manufacturing operation; a general business proposal does not confirm that every process or loss is covered.

Public liability, professional indemnity and property: what is different?

Public liability is often used to describe commercial general liability for covered injury or property damage claims. Professional indemnity, commonly called errors and omissions, addresses particular professional-service allegations under its wording. Commercial property concerns the insured building, contents or stock. Ask how these protections fit together for your work and contractual requirements. A price comparison must use the same limits, activities and deductibles; the lowest general liability quote does not replace professional or property coverage.

Is business overhead expense insurance the same as business interruption?

They address different questions. When asking about overhead expense protection, explain whether the concern is an owner's inability to work or disruption following property damage. Ask the provider which product addresses that trigger, which expenses are eligible and what waiting period and payment limits apply. Similarly, employee health, disability or accident benefits require a separate review from ordinary property and liability insurance. Do not assume one small-business package covers every source of lost income.

Which small-business insurance add-ons are worth comparing?

Start with a specific uninsured exposure or contractual need rather than buying every add-on. Ask about cyber events, professional services, equipment breakdown, crime, transit, hired vehicles and interruption where relevant. Request the limit, deductible, exclusions and extra premium for each option. A rider included by one provider may differ from another insurer's endorsement. We do not rank providers or say a particular add-on is best for every business without reviewing the actual proposals.

What should I ask about fleet insurance claims?

Confirm the claims contact, reporting procedure, repair arrangements, deductibles and any replacement vehicle cover. Ask how one vehicle being out of service affects the operation and whether the policy addresses that need.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Life insurance

Can I ask about life insurance before choosing a coverage amount?

Yes. Start with your province, priorities and approximate budget. You can prepare a household needs estimate before discussing a specific amount with an appropriately licensed professional. This website’s contact step does not submit an insurance application.

Will I need to share medical details here?

No. Do not put medical information in an initial enquiry email. Ask the receiving provider how to share it securely, what underwriting is required and when a decision can be expected.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not every application requires an exam. The insurer decides what evidence it needs based on the product and your circumstances. Sun Life explains underwriting , including questionnaires and medical evidence. Ask the provider which process applies before assuming a quick approval.

What is the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Term provides protection for a selected period; whole life is a form of permanent insurance. Compare the purpose, budget, coverage period and policy features with a licensed professional. Neither choice is automatically right for every household. Compare the policy types with FCAC .

What if I smoke or vape?

Disclose tobacco, nicotine and vaping use accurately. Insurers define smoking status and any later reassessment differently. Ask which definition applies and what evidence a review requires. Sun Life’s smoking-status guide gives an insurer-specific example; it is not a quote or an offer through this website.

Can I get coverage with a health condition?

A health condition does not tell you the outcome by itself. The product and the insurer’s assessment matter. Ask the provider what evidence is required and whether a proposal has exclusions, a different premium or other conditions. Read how an insurer assesses an application .

What does a life insurance beneficiary receive?

A beneficiary is the person or organization named to receive the death benefit when a covered death occurs. Review beneficiary designations when your circumstances change and ask how primary and alternate beneficiaries work.

Does term life insurance build cash value?

Term life insurance covers a specified period and does not build cash value. Some permanent policies do. Ask about guarantees, costs and the consequences of cancellation before comparing the two.

Can I name more than one life insurance beneficiary?

You may name multiple beneficiaries and specify their shares. Changing a designation can depend on whether it is revocable or irrevocable and on provincial rules. Confirm the requirements with the provider.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Travel insurance

My trip is soon. What should I have ready?

Start with your departure date, destination and who is travelling. Contact us about provider availability, then ask the provider to confirm whether it can assess the request before departure. Do not assume an enquiry creates coverage.

Should I compare single-trip and annual travel insurance?

If you expect several trips, ask for both options using the dates and coverage you need. Compare the total price and the maximum length of each covered trip. An annual plan is not automatically the better value for every traveller.

Does OHIP cover me outside Canada?

OHIP may reimburse limited amounts for qualifying services outside Canada, but it does not replace travel medical insurance or cover the cost of transporting you back to an Ontario hospital. Review Ontario’s current out-of-country coverage guidance before travelling.

Is my credit card travel insurance enough?

Read the benefit certificate for your card and compare it with the actual trip. Ask about insured travellers, covered dates, age restrictions, payment requirements, exclusions and any optional extension. Do not assume a card’s marketing summary describes every condition.

Can I buy travel insurance after I have left?

Ask the provider whether it offers coverage after departure and what conditions or waiting periods apply. An enquiry cannot cover an event that has already happened. Confirm acceptance and the effective date directly with the provider.

Does Insurance Genie sell travel insurance?

No. Insurance Genie provides information and an enquiry route. Ask about an appropriately licensed provider and product availability in your province. This website does not issue travel policies or confirm that coverage has started.

What is the difference between trip cancellation and interruption?

Cancellation coverage concerns cancelling before departure; interruption concerns a trip disrupted after departure. Covered reasons, reimbursement limits and exclusions depend on the policy. Neither automatically covers every change of plan.

How do pre-existing medical conditions affect travel insurance?

Ask the insurer about its definition, stability period, symptoms, medications and changes in health. Get written confirmation of how your condition is covered; do not assume a stable condition is automatically included.

Should I check activities and destinations before travelling?

Yes. Review exclusions for planned activities and destinations, the full trip length, medical evacuation and assistance requirements. Confirm the wording before departure, especially where an advisory or higher-risk activity may affect coverage.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Health & disability

What can personal health insurance add to provincial coverage?

Personal or workplace health coverage may help with eligible prescription, dental, vision or other expenses outside your provincial plan. Check covered services, reimbursement percentages, annual maximums and existing workplace benefits.

What is critical illness insurance?

Critical illness insurance may pay a lump sum when a diagnosis meets the policy definition of a covered illness. Insurers use different definitions and conditions, so check the actual wording and eligibility requirements.

What does long-term care insurance address?

Long-term care insurance may help pay for care when you cannot manage specified daily activities independently. Review benefit triggers, eligible services and limits; public care funding may not meet every expense.

How is disability insurance different from health insurance?

Disability insurance addresses eligible loss of income when illness or injury prevents you from working. A health plan generally reimburses eligible medical expenses. Review the disability definition, waiting period, benefit amount and payment duration.

Should I review workplace benefits before buying more coverage?

Yes. Compare existing health and disability benefits with the proposed policy. Check limits, waiting periods and how other benefits affect payment so you understand gaps and overlapping protection.

INSURANCE ANSWERS

Claims & renewals

When should I start comparing before renewal?

Start before the renewal deadline so you have time to gather documents, ask questions and review proposals. The provider can explain quote validity, cancellation terms and the effective date. Confirm replacement coverage before cancelling the current policy. Read FSRA's shopping guidance.

Where should I start when renewing home insurance?

Use your renewal date and current policy as a starting point. Note changes to the home, occupants or use, and ask what information a provider needs to compare options. You can begin with the contact options even if you are still gathering details.

How long does the insurance claim process take?

An insurance claim can take different amounts of time depending on the loss, available evidence, coverage review, repair estimates and parts or contractor availability. Ask the adjuster for the next step, any outstanding documents and an expected update date. Keep claim notes and copies of submissions. A guide cannot promise one settlement deadline for every claim; your insurer must explain the process that applies to your circumstances.

If I claim on one policy, does the other rate rise?

The claim rates on the policy it occurred under. Bundling does not spread a claim across lines, though insurer-level retention decisions consider the account.

Will one water claim affect my rate?

Typically yes, and water claims affect eligibility more than most. Two water claims in a short window can move you into a non-standard market.

Can I arrange a car insurance deductible payment plan?

Ask the repair shop whether it can offer written instalments and ask the adjuster how that arrangement would fit the claim. A car insurance deductible payment plan is not guaranteed and does not remove your share of the covered loss. Confirm interest, fees, payment dates and any effect on repairs before agreeing. If your premium is also overdue, discuss that separate issue with the insurer promptly.

Can my insurer raise my rate with no claims or tickets?

A renewal premium can change even when your individual driving record has not. Ask the insurer or broker which rating or coverage changes explain the new price, then compare equivalent coverage before deciding.

What should I gather before reporting an insurance claim?

Have the policy number, details of the incident and supporting records ready. Follow your insurer’s reporting instructions, ask what documents are required and retain copies of correspondence and receipts.

What should I do if a claim decision is unclear?

Ask the insurer to explain its decision and the relevant policy terms. Request the next steps in its complaint process if the issue remains unresolved, and keep a written record of the discussion.

MAKE YOUR NEXT STEP COUNT

These answers explain common questions. A licensed professional can review the policy terms and details that apply to you. Product availability varies by province and provider.
