When should you shop your auto renewal?
Start 30 to 45 days before your renewal date. That is enough time to compare options and switch cleanly — without a coverage lapse, which itself raises your next rate.
Most Ontario drivers let their policy renew automatically. Insurers know this, and renewal pricing quietly assumes it. The drivers who pay the least are the ones who treat the renewal letter as a starting offer, not a bill.
Why 30–45 days is the window
- Earlier than 60 days: most insurers will not firm-quote that far out, so the numbers you gather go stale.
- Inside 30 days: you can still switch, but you are rushing document handover and risking a gap between policies.
- After renewal: mid-term cancellation usually carries a short-rate penalty — you can still leave, but it costs more than switching at renewal.
What actually changes year to year
Even with a clean record, your premium moves: territory factors get refiled, vehicle rate groups get updated, and your own profile ages — tickets fall off after three years, claims after six for most insurers, and years-licensed keeps accruing. Any one of those can flip which insurer is cheapest for you.

The lapse trap
Whatever you do, do not let the old policy end before the new one starts. Even a one-day lapse reads as continuous-insurance interruption and rates against you for years. A licensed professional will line the dates up so the handover is seamless.
