A simple next step

Start with the life you want to protect.

You do not need a perfect coverage figure to ask your first question. Bring a starting point.

Set the priorities

List the people who depend on you, major debts, ongoing household costs and goals you want to discuss.

Gather what you have

Prepare a summary of personal and workplace coverage and a monthly budget you feel comfortable discussing.

Find the next step

Enquire about an appropriately licensed provider in your province. Share health information through that provider’s secure process.

Insurance Genie is an information and referral platform. Ask about life-insurance provider availability; a provider and any coverage are not confirmed by this page.

How the platform works →
Can I ask about life insurance before choosing a coverage amount?

Yes. Start with your province, priorities and approximate budget. You can prepare a household needs estimate before discussing a specific amount with an appropriately licensed professional. This website’s contact step does not submit an insurance application.

Will I need to share medical details here?

No. Do not put medical information in an initial enquiry email. Ask the receiving provider how to share it securely, what underwriting is required and when a decision can be expected.

Short answer

Life insurance is designed to provide a death benefit while the policy is in effect. Term insurance covers a set period; permanent insurance is designed for lifelong needs. Start with the people and obligations you want to protect, then compare policy types and their costs. FCAC’s life insurance guide explains the main differences.

Term life

Protection for a defined period. Ask how the term fits your plans and what happens at renewal.

Compare the coverage period

Whole life

A type of permanent life insurance. Review the premium commitment, cash values and any non-guaranteed features.

Review long-term affordability

Critical illness

A benefit for a condition covered by the policy. Definitions and payment requirements vary.

Check covered conditions

Disability

Income protection for a qualifying disability. Review how the policy defines disability and when benefits begin.

Compare waiting periods

Compare an actual written proposal for your circumstances. Read FCAC’s guidance on critical illness insurance and disability insurance. Availability and policy terms must be confirmed by the receiving provider.

Get it right

How much cover do you actually need?

The working number

Outstanding mortgage$540,000
Other debt$28,000
Income replacement — 10 years$820,000
Education for two children$120,000
Final expenses$25,000
Less existing group coverage−$180,000
Indicated coverage$1,353,000

Illustrative worked example. Your figure depends on your household.

  • Check workplace coverage. Ask what you have now and what happens if your employment changes.
  • Match the years to the need. A mortgage balance and a long-term family goal may call for different conversations.
  • Make the budget sustainable. Ask about the current premium, later costs and what is guaranteed.
  • Review beneficiary choices. Keep the people you intend to protect in view as your circumstances change.

Life insurance FAQ

Do I need a medical exam?
Not every application requires an exam. The insurer decides what evidence it needs based on the product and your circumstances. Sun Life explains underwriting, including questionnaires and medical evidence. Ask the provider which process applies before assuming a quick approval.
Is Insurance Genie licensed to sell life insurance?
No. Insurance Genie provides information and referral support; it is not an insurer, brokerage or agency. Ask about an appropriately licensed life-insurance provider in your province. This page does not confirm that a provider is available or that a request has been accepted.
Term or whole life?
Term provides protection for a selected period; whole life is a form of permanent insurance. Compare the purpose, budget, coverage period and policy features with a licensed professional. Neither choice is automatically right for every household. Compare the policy types with FCAC.
What if I smoke or vape?
Disclose tobacco, nicotine and vaping use accurately. Insurers define smoking status and any later reassessment differently. Ask which definition applies and what evidence a review requires. Sun Life’s smoking-status guide gives an insurer-specific example; it is not a quote or an offer through this website.
Can I get coverage with a health condition?
A health condition does not tell you the outcome by itself. The product and the insurer’s assessment matter. Ask the provider what evidence is required and whether a proposal has exclusions, a different premium or other conditions. Read how an insurer assesses an application.
