A G1 driver usually adds little or nothing to a family policy. The premium event is the G2 — solo driving starts, and the new driver rates as a principal or occasional operator. Rates then fall meaningfully with the full G plus each clean year.
Ontario’s graduated licensing system spreads the cost of becoming a driver over several years. Knowing what changes at each stage lets a family plan the premium instead of being surprised by it.
| Stage | What changes | Premium effect |
|---|---|---|
| G1 | Learner — always accompanied | Usually free or nominal to list |
| G2 | Solo driving begins | The big step — new-driver rating applies |
| Full G | Full privileges | Meaningful drop, grows with each clean year |
Convictions in the first licensed years carry outsized weight because there is no long history to dilute them. The insurance value of a clean first three years is larger than any discount on this list.
