Your first car insurance policy: a plain-language guide

First policy · Ontario
Short answer

Ontario requires third-party liability and uninsured automobile coverage. For a new policy purchased on or after July 1, 2026, mandatory accident benefits cover medical, rehabilitation and attendant care; other benefits are optional. Direct Compensation-Property Damage (DCPD) is included in the standard policy, but a written election can remove your right to recover collision damage. Review those choices before buying.

Before agreeing to a vehicle pickup date, ask a licensed insurance professional to confirm the coverage, effective time and proof of insurance you will need. A quote request alone does not put coverage in force.

Mandatory vs optional

CoverageStatusWhat it does
Third-party liabilityMandatoryAt least $200,000 is required by law. Compare higher limits with your licensed professional.
Accident benefitsMandatory core; optional additionsFor new policies from July 1, 2026: medical, rehabilitation and attendant care remain mandatory. Income replacement and other benefits are optional.
Uninsured automobileMandatoryProtection for specified losses involving uninsured or unidentified vehicles, subject to policy conditions.
Direct compensation (DCPD)Standard; written election availableYour own insurer handles eligible not-at-fault vehicle damage. Conditions apply; an OPCF 49 election gives up recovery rights.
CollisionOptionalDamage from collision or upset, subject to the deductible, exclusions and policy conditions.
ComprehensiveOptionalSpecified non-collision losses, such as theft, fire and vandalism, subject to policy conditions.

Check FSRA's standard policy guide, the July 2026 accident-benefit changes and the OPCF 49 election before choosing coverage. Ask what you would have to pay yourself after an accident.

Deductibles are where you tune the premium

Ask for prices using two deductible options while keeping the other coverage the same. Compare the annual premium difference with the extra amount you would pay after a covered loss. Before removing collision from an older car, consider its replacement cost, your available cash and any lender or lease requirements. Savings depend on the insurer and your circumstances.

Frequently asked

Can I drive a new car home on the old owner’s insurance?
No. You need your own coverage in place before you drive it — dealerships will ask for proof.
Is $1M liability enough?
There is no single limit that suits every driver. Ontario's legal minimum is $200,000, but a claim can exceed that amount. Ask a licensed professional to compare available limits, prices and your potential exposure; a higher limit is a coverage decision, not a guarantee that every loss will be paid.
Do I need rental car coverage endorsements?
Ask about two different needs: transportation replacement (OPCF 20) after an insured loss to your car, and damage coverage for eligible rented or borrowed vehicles (OPCF 27). Limits, deductibles and conditions differ. Compare the price and any overlapping protection before adding an endorsement. FSRA explains these optional coverages.
