Put paid instruction at the centre of the review

Teaching use and drivers

Disclose paid lessons, student drivers, instructors, road tests, personal use and any other work involving the vehicle. Ask for written confirmation that the proposed policy accepts the actual use.

Vehicle protection

Discuss liability, applicable accident benefits, collision, theft and other selected protections. Compare deductibles and ask how dual controls and other modifications must be recorded.

Single vehicles and fleets

Provide every vehicle and instructor on the schedule. Fleet eligibility, vehicle counts and underwriting requirements vary; do not assume one arrangement automatically covers the whole school.

Downtime and replacement vehicles

Ask whether replacement transport is available and whether any substitute vehicle may be used for instruction. Ordinary rental reimbursement may not meet a driving school’s operational needs.

Bring a complete vehicle and instructor schedule

  • Vehicle identification numbers, ownership, financing and modifications
  • Instructor licensing and driving history, as requested by the provider
  • Lesson areas, annual distance, overnight parking and personal use
  • School affiliations, instructor contracts and road-test use
  • Current policies, claims history and renewal dates

Confirm provincial and municipal licensing requirements for each operating location. For example, Brampton publishes its own driving-school vehicle application and insurance requirements; those local requirements should not be assumed to apply across Canada.

Coordinate the school and the fleet

Vehicle insurance and premises liability address different exposures. Keep the school’s legal name, contracts, instructor arrangements and vehicle schedules consistent across the review.

Questions before you choose

Will a personal car policy cover paid lessons?

Do not assume it will. Disclose the teaching use and obtain confirmation of the accepted use and required wording from the insurance professional arranging coverage.

Are all instructors and students automatically covered?

Ask how permitted drivers and student instruction are defined. Supply the information requested for each vehicle and instructor.

Does a fleet policy include classroom liability?

Ask for a separate business coverage review. Vehicle and classroom exposures should each be addressed in the proposed terms.
