Fidelity and Crime Insurance

Fidelity and crime protection is often called bonding in everyday conversation, but it should be distinguished from contract surety. The central question is whose loss is insured and what dishonest conduct the wording addresses.

A practical comparison guide

Match the document to the obligation

Map access to money, inventory and payment systems. Explain employee roles, subcontractors, client property and controls for changing banking instructions. Ask separately about employee theft, forgery, social engineering and computer-related crime. Similar-sounding products can have different triggers and verification conditions.

Questions to bring to the discussion

Before requesting terms, identify the party requiring the bond, the exact obligation and the approved form. Ask about underwriting information, indemnity commitments, collateral if applicable, and how cancellation or release works. Keep written confirmation of acceptance. A quotation, application or payment receipt is not the same as an issued and accepted bond.

Prepare these details

  • Client bonding request
  • Staff and contractor roles
  • Money and property exposure
  • Payment verification controls

Use current documents. If a detail is uncertain, identify it for the provider instead of guessing.

Your questions, answered

Is saying our staff are bonded enough for a client?

No. Ask what protection the client requires and obtain the actual wording or certificate. Employee dishonesty coverage for your own loss may not address a client's loss, and subcontractors may be treated differently.

What affects the terms I can obtain?

For a bond, the obligation, financial position, experience and required wording are part of the discussion. Ask for all costs and indemnity requirements before proceeding. Acceptance is subject to the surety and obligee.
