How the driving score is calculated.

Published in full, because a score you cannot interrogate is a score you cannot improve. Six inputs, fixed weights, no black box.

Short answer

The Genie App driving score runs from 0 to 100 across six weighted inputs: smooth braking (25%), speed relative to the posted limit (25%), phone use while moving (20%), acceleration and cornering (15%), time of day (10%) and trip distance context (5%). It is recalculated on a rolling 30-day window, so a bad week fades rather than following you.

InputWeightWhat moves it
Smooth braking25%Harsh decelerations per 100 km
Speed vs. limit25%Time spent above the posted limit, weighted by margin
Phone use20%Screen interaction while the vehicle is moving
Acceleration & cornering15%Aggressive events per 100 km
Time of day10%Share of distance driven between 11pm and 5am
Trip context5%Distance and road type, used to normalise the rest

Rolling 30-day window. A single event never dominates. Passenger trips can be marked as such and are excluded.

Data & consent

What is collected, and who can see it.

Collected

  • Accelerometer and gyroscope motion events
  • GPS trace during an active trip, used to derive speed and road type
  • Screen-on events while the vehicle is in motion
  • Trip start and end times and distance

Not collected

  • Anything while a trip is not active
  • Message, call or app content of any kind
  • Contacts, photos or microphone
  • Location when the app is closed and no trip is running

Family members

See the same trips, scores and coaching the driver sees. Nothing more, and nothing hidden from the driver.

Under-18 drivers

Require both a parent or guardian and the driver’s own consent on their own device. The driver can see, at any time, exactly who has access.

Insurers

No access. Ever, by default. Sharing is per-instance, explicit, summary-only and revocable.

Full detail is set out in the Privacy Policy, which covers insurancegenie.ca, the request flow and the Genie App. Telematics data is sensitive personal information under PIPEDA and is treated accordingly.

Scoring FAQ

Does a passenger trip hurt my score?
No, if you mark it. Trips can be tagged as passenger, transit or cycling and are excluded from scoring.
What if the speed limit data is wrong?
Dispute any trip from the trip detail screen. Disputed segments are excluded while under review, and repeated errors on a road segment get the underlying map data corrected.
Why is a rolling window used?
Because a permanent average punishes people for a bad month two years ago and gives them nothing to work toward. A 30-day window means improvement shows up quickly, which is the entire point.
Can I use the app without location access?
Partially. Motion-based scoring works without GPS, but speed and road context do not, so the score is less complete.
